November 2023. Elevate Perspective: Do it. Again, and again.

All of us have different sets of habits that we display every day, some unknowingly. Many times, we don’t even give them any thought. They are, in fact, quite unintentional. This writer supposes that some habits are comforting in their way, giving small pockets of order and familiarity that are satisfying to us.


Habits fall broadly and simply into two categories: good and bad.


We all know this. The tricky thing about bad habits is that they have a habit (pun alert!) of creeping up on us, especially in movement and how we use our bodies. For example, if it is your habit to only sleep on your left side at night, your left shoulder could be feeling compressed when you wake up or your right knee might be twisted and a bit sore. Another example is sitting improperly at your desk: You might have a habit of craning your neck forward toward your computer screen (unintentionally, of course) and then develop neck issues like pain over time.


We don’t want to have bad movement habits but they, unfortunately, have made themselves comfortable in our bodies. Some might argue that bad movement habits are natural and correcting them feels wrong, but what feels natural isn’t always what is best for your body. You’re just used to it. That’s all.


The worst part? Bad habits can be precursors to more serious conditions and issues that will take a lot of time to rectify in the end. The different parts of the body are so interconnected that a bad habit of sitting with a skewed pelvis for really long periods could turn into having a rigid and misaligned spine, which could lead to migraines, back pain, poor appetite, fatigue, etc. “It’s ok, I’ll be fine” are words spoken too often and allow us to skip having to do what is necessary for our well-being.


Do you know what a good habit is? Coming to Elevate and working on yourself. We are all more cognisant of health as wealth post-COVID. Doing a Pilates class not only addresses bad movement habits but also reinforces our mind-body connection and helps build and instill the mindfulness we all need.
