Elevate Perspectives (June 2023): Good vs Great: Picking a Pilates Studio

We live in a time where we can purchase pretty much anything with a click of a button. Want the latest fashion? You can get it. We choose where to eat (sometimes can be difficult with all the restaurants) and we buy the best quality items for our day to day lives. There’s something for everyone. This is the same for Pilates studios.

The list of what makes a good Pilates studio isn’t long. Let’s have a go and see if this works for you, dear reader.

A good Pilates studio:

  1. Is clean and fully outfitted with various high quality Pilates apparatuses and equipment (reformer, cadillac, stability chair, ladder barrel, spine corrector) and their complementary accessories/props (mats, bands, etc)

  2. Offers a range of classes that addresses the issues of clients and works toward improving and creating flexibility, stability, strength, coordination, etc. through the focus on mindful movement

  3. Has a team of experts in the field of body conditioning who continuously work towards improving their own craft as they coach and train their clients.

  4. Fosters an environment where instructors actively meet the client's fitness needs and goals, which can change/evolve over time.

In Hong Kong there are many studios that offer all the items listed above. Sure, they are good studios and most of the time they will be sufficient for what you would need and want. Is that what you really want? What if this writer told you that instead of just good, a studio could be great? Let’s remember the main points from the previous list and this time make some adjustments.

A GREAT Pilates studio:

  1. Is clean and fully outfitted with various high quality Pilates apparatuses and equipment (reformer, cadillac, stability chair, ladder barrel, spine corrector) and their complementary accessories/props (mats, bands, etc), which are used correctly and safely, taking into consideration the client’s specific issues

  2. Offers a range of classes that addresses the issues of clients and works toward improving and creating flexibility, stability, strength, coordination, etc through the focus on mindful movement while also providing correlating practical knowledge so that clients put into practice what they learn.

  3. Has a team of caring experts in the field of body conditioning who continuously work towards improving their own craft as they coach and train their clients to the best of their abilities and who recognise their responsibilities as trusted professionals who can make immense positive impact of the lives of clients.

  4. Fosters an environment where instructors actively meet the client's fitness needs and goals, which can change/evolve over time, while providing a safe space where clients can come and belong to a community that accepts and celebrates them regardless of race, gender, age, and experience so that they can be the best they can be.

Elevate Pilates Instructors

So… good or great? We could redecorate our space and make it more upscale and also be more “show biz” in our approach to how we market ourselves. Instead, we make sure that all of the team members work together in trying to be a GREAT studio for our community. This is our mission and we are sticking to it.
